In the last few days I have been having a vigorous exchange of emails with a dear friend whose political views are directly opposed to my own, but I think our correspondence has cheered us both up no end. Nothing like laying out how you have got to where you are now to give you a sense of perspective, and shake off some of the post-election gloom. I told him this true story from my childhood.

Nigel Farage must be thrilled with the coverage he is getting on the TV and in newspapers but surely the whole discussion must be more than a debate on the nature of the United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP)?
