Right to Buy reduces the council housing stock to an unacceptable level

I live in quite a small village in East Sussex.  Inevitably, for some time our population has been growing, which has brought some advantages to what is essentially a rural community. By rural I mean that we have a great many more farms than shops near us, which seems to me as good a definition.   Houses are going up everywhere. As are the prices of them. Our village school, once languishing, is now thriving. I wonder how many of the youngsters at that school will be able to stay in this village when they grow up? Where in the election manifestos can we find a solution to the housing crises?

The scarcity and cost of housing will undoubtedly be a key manifesto item in the run up to the 2015 General Election. The basic need for both shelter and the security of a fixed address will perhaps prove a vote winner for whichever party addresses the issue effectively.

The latest Tory giveaway could leave the most needy homeless

Pledges to spend, tax breaks for some, a nice big handout for the NHS and now the chance for housing association tenants to buy their own home may all be tempting reasons to vote Conservative in May.  But remember that they intend to eliminate the deficit and have a surplus by 2020 and then think about why they haven’t said anything about where the money will come from to fulfill these promises.  But also think about the Right to Buy scheme and ask if this promise is really helping those who need helping most of all?
