The West has followed the neo-liberal path away from the totalitarian ideals that dictated the path of Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union.  But, does economic freedom means removing the safety net that exists for individuals whose circumstances dictate that they cannot benefit from such liberty?  How far can economic freedom and the reduction of the state be taken before unnecessary pain is inflicted on individuals? Is prison really a soft option?

Many times I have had somebody say to me that they feel prison is something of a cushy option when it comes to punishment.  For some a prison sentence does not appear to be an adequate punishment for the crimes that have been committed.

I would like to argue that the loss of freedom is a quite dreadful experience for many.  Losing the right to do the simple things in life that most of us take for granted can have an enormous impact on a person.
