I had come to the end of my night shift, and my eyes were glazing over at the sight of the BBC breakfast news. Then a report came on about the exodus of Rohingya people from Myanmar, delivered by the correspondent Jonathan Head. In previous days, I had listened to him describe the horror of seeing hundreds of people crammed into a boat, which had been left to drift in the Gulf of Thailand. It was estimated that the boat had been at sea for two-and-a-half months, having already been rejected by Malaysian and Thai authorities.
As the laws that govern prostitution were debated once again, this time in the European Parliament; many people have expressed strong views concerning the sex trade industry. Are we getting nearer to ending the practice of prostitution? What are the reasons for wanting to end this practice or should it be allowed, to give people the right to make their own minds up?
