The hypocricy of Shell demonstrates how much they need public support

Despite Shell preparing to send out a rig to start deep sea drilling in the  arctic. Ben Van Bearden, Shell’s chief executive has spoken out regarding his concern for tackling climate change.  Is it just me being cynical or am I right in thinking that he was engaging in a little PR exercise?  Was this declaration of his concern for  the environment simply damage limitation following the highly publicised protest orgnaised in Seattle around the rig they intend to use for drilling in the Arctic? No place for human industry in the arctic

This week, hundreds of people took to the waters of Eliot Bay, Seattle, in kayaks and small boats. They were protesting against the US government’s decision to approve drilling in the Arctic. They gathered outside the one hundred yard exclusion zone of a giant oil rig – the Polar Pioneer – which is one of two owned and operated by Shell. It is the company’s intention to install this, along with its sister vessel, off the northern coast of Alaska in the coming months.
